Is There A Successful Baldness Cure?
Though the short answer is yes and no, I understand that answer is not very convincing. You actually need to understand that hair loss and baldness is a fairly difficult medical condition. We can start with admitting that there are a number of causes for bald areas in both males and females which include poor diet, radical diets, stress, hormonal imbalances and childbirth in women. Hair can re-grow as soon as the external cause is removed hence the results of these causes of hair loss are not really categorized as baldness. In fact, it is common for a new mother to have significant hair loss soon after birth, but amidst a few months when her body chemistry and hormones normalize, it grows again.
True baldness is a hair loss condition known as androgenic alopecia that can not usually be reversed. In the case of this genetic medical disease, there is truly no baldness cure. There are a number of treatments to slow hair loss, but once it has fallen out the only truly effective process is to have hair grafts transplanted into the bald areas. For the treatment of hair loss, the United States FDA has certified two drugs. Finasteride, the first of these, works to prevent the hormonal substance DHT that is responsible for the hair loss. In reality, this DHT attacks the hair follicles (hair roots) in a way that inhibits the flow of nutrients. This stops the formation of keratin which is the material hair shafts are made of.
The second approved drug is minoxidil which is a topically applied, spread on the scalp and massaged in drug. It moves to the root of the hair and basically protects it from DHT. This allows the hair shaft to grow further when the DHT can not bind with the hair follicle.
Both of these drugs will decelerate hair loss in most patients, but they are very poor at assisting to stimulate the dormant follicles. For this case, the best option is to have hair grafts taken from one spot of the head, usually at the back and then implanted into the bald area. Although it has the same result as curing baldness, this is not a real cure for baldness; it is a way to get hair growing back. This porcess is not cheap as the hair restoration costs can run to thousands of dollars but it is effective.
