In today’s society workout headphones are a very popular item to have when you participate in your workout sessions. No matter if you go to the gym and workout or go running or cycling, music is something which most people enjoy during exercise. While certainly not for everyone, music can “pump you up” enabling you to push yourself further for greater fitness benefits.

Most gyms will have music on in the background, but not everyone enjoys the same music; what is seen as a great workout song to me could be something which another person hates. This is the reason why mp3 players and Apple iPods have become so popular. They enable us to listen to our favorite music, even during a highly intensive workout session.

Most mp3 player devices come with a standard set of headphones; these headphones tend to be of a lower quality. When I have used these types of earphones the sound quality is ok but I would often find myself turning the volume to max to hear the music above any outside noises. When you turn the volume up to max you not only shorten your batteries life but run the risk of damaging your hearing. I found with these cheaper workout headphones, I would accidentally catch and stretch the cable will leading to the dreaded scenario of 1 earphone working while the other doesn’t. They aren’t very durable making them a disaster for using during a good workout session.

Its best if you go out and buy a set of workout headphones specifically designed for use during exercise. Here are a few of the different types of headphones to choose from:

Full Size Headphones – great for using at home but way too big for using while exercising. Will make your ears hot and sweaty and will be very uncomfortable.

Neckband Headphones – these are made for exercise, designed to stay on during exercise while also being highly durable.

Clip on ear headphones – clips onto each ear separately to prevent falling off during exercise, however can be uncomfortable for some people.

Ear Bud (ear canal) headphones – designed to fit comfortably (usually come with multiple attachments so each person can find the right size for them) I find these extremely comfortable and unless I accidentally catch the wire, they stay in during highly intense exercise sessions.

The ear canal workout headphones are my favorite for exercise (I own a pair of sennheiser noise cancelling headphones). With noise cancelling headphones always be careful outdoors and be aware of what is around you.

In order to get the full benefit of your music during exercise I highly recommend you consider a higher quality of headphones. They can seem expensive at first but they are designed to last. (If you have problems catching the wire, why not buy an arm band to put your mp3 player in). I have owned my current set of workout headphones for 3-4 years and they are still doing a fantastic job today and they only cost me $20.
